Adrenal Dysfunction

What Is It?
Do You Suffer From It?

(If you’ve landed at this site, it’s likely that you do.)

It’s unfortunate, but people usually find a lot of misinformation—or no information—about Adrenal Dysfunction, CFS and Fibromyalgia. An understanding concerning this disease and its connection to other conditions does not come quickly or easily. In his series, Adrenal Phone School, Dr. Neville details the condition itself, its assessment, treatment, and its myriad symptoms.

How can you tell if you’re truly suffering from Adrenal Dysfunction? Could this be the cause of your CFS or Fibro? Common early warning signs of Adrenal Dysfunction include hypoglycemia, low blood pressure, headaches, and dehydration issues. These symptoms are often ignored or commonly misinterpreted, and they soon worsen if ignored, as sufferers then fall prey to anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, pain, weight gain, and irritable bowel. Eventually, this condition can even snowball into what is known as CFS or Fibromyalgia.

Misdiagnosed?

People with these advanced symptoms often go from doctor to doctor, who treat only the symptoms, because no one looks for a root cause for the entire list of complaints. As the condition progresses, people will undergo deterioration of thyroid function (leading to hypothyroidism) and reproductive function (leading to PMS, infertility, and early menopause in women; or erectile dysfunction in men).

These secondary effects of Adrenal Dysfunction then contribute to a significant metabolic imbalance, increased free radical production, and chronic inflammation; they eventually lead to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia.

Here is what most “experts” don’t know, or don’t tell you: You don’t have to have full-blown Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Fibromyalgia to have Adrenal Dysfunction. Adrenal Dysfunction is the defining, undiagnosed epidemic of our time, and can present as many different symptoms. Patients never suspect that these symptoms have a deeper origin…or a better solution than the “prescription-du-jour” handed to them from their GP.

After numerous visits to chiropractors, family practitioners, specialists, and hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in testing, Dr. Neville made an assessment in our first meeting that finally fit all of my symptoms. An Adrenal Stress Index (*ASI) test confirmed his initial assessment: I had severe Adrenal Dysfunction. Seeing this in black and white validated my feelings of anxiety which had plagued me for my entire life. I wasn’t crazy; my body simply did not have the physical ability to handle stress.

Most of our patients find little help in treating this disease with “mainstream” medicine, and few patients have had any real lasting success with other alternative practitioners or “experts.” That is not surprising to us at Clymer Healing Center. It is impossible to compete with our longevity, our research, and our experience.

Because of its complicated nature, there is no single drug that will be able to cure Adrenal Dysfunction, and hence no governmental research money for better development or understanding.

In addition, the westernized medical paradigm that is so prevalent in the United States is a hotbed of reductionist-thinking, in which the specialist is the expert and the general practitioner is merely there to triage patients. Sufferers of Adrenal Dysfunction are often shuffled from specialist to specialist, who treat one symptom after the next, but who never look at the symptoms as a whole, or at their one, underlying cause.

But Just What Is Adrenal Dysfunction?

In brief, it is a breakdown of your body’s stress-response system. When this system is overtaxed or hyper-activated, it creates a barrage of seemingly disjointed symptoms, the conglomeration of which is termed “Adrenal Dysfunction.” This “overtaxing” occurs at some point in everyone’s life; some have it for months, some have it for decades.

Once the breakdown of this stress physiology occurs, the body will develop secondary and tertiary dysfunctions in various organ systems, leading to symptoms as diverse as insomnia to somnolence, anxiety to debilitating fatigue. The capacity of the body’s ability to react to and handle innate and external stressors is unique for everyone.

Dr. Neville and Clymer didn’t offer a quick-fix miracle cure; he had a real understanding of the mechanism behind this disease and a step-by-step approach to building me back up to restored health.
